The sacrifice

The objects from Gallemose were found in what is now an overgrown bog. At the time when the bronze items were deposited it was a lake of open water. The sacrifice was made at least 50 metres from the lake shore, so the owners of the bronze hoard probably rowed out there in a boat to give their valuables to the higher powers. This may have been part of a ceremonial feast. This kind of offering in wetland areas, lakes and bogs was widespread in the Bronze Age.

Perhaps there are some sacrificial finds in Bøllemosen in northern Zealand?
The sacrifice
Many different things could be sacrificed in the bogs. Here a spear can be seen from Valsømagle, together with a heavy bronze axe from Fårdrup, both western Zealand.
