Design through the ages

There are striking resemblances between the folding chair found in Guldhøj and its counterparts in the Mediterranean area. There is no doubt that the folding chair itself did not make the journey from the Mediterranean area to Denmark. But the idea or design of the chair did travel that long distance. The idea came from far away, although the chair itself is a domestic product. The design of the chair is simple and practical. In recent times there have been new interpretations of its design. In 1934 the designer Ole Wanscher made a version of the chair – the so-called model PJ-2000. Poul Hundevad’s ‘Guldhøj Stool’ is also an interpretation of the ancient design.
