The Hjortspring Boat’s sister Tilia Alsie
Experimental archaeology can give us new knowledge of the past. The Hjortspring Boat Guild was formed in 1991. Its aim was to create as accurate a copy of the original Hjortspring Boat as possible. The copy was launched in 1999 and was given the name Tilia. This is the Latin name for lime, the wood of which the Hjortspring Boat is made. The copy provided insight into the good sailing qualities of the Hjortspring Boat. It was possible to investigate factors such as acceleration, speed, stopping distance, turning diameter and stability. The boat is highly seaworthy and with experienced rowers can be got up to a speed of around 8 knots.
