Can Denmark stand up to a hulking war machine such as Nazi Germany?

On 9 April 1940, the Germans invaded Denmark and all across the country, Danes woke up to a new reality.

What could and should be done? As bombers circled over the capital, the Prime Minister and the King were faced with an ultimatum from the Germans: Surrender or we will blow you to kingdom come. How can the country’s leaders best defend the nation and its citizens?

But it is not just the Prime Minister and the King who must make tough decisions over the course of the five-year occupation. Every last citizen must make a choice. To get on with their lives as before. Or to fight back and resist.

Would you put your life on the line to help those who the Nazis want to send to concentration camps? The cost of resistance can be high. Would you be willing to pay with your life to save others?

Our knowledgeable guides will give you an introduction to the occupation and the exhibition at the Museum of Danish Resistance.

We will take a closer look at the policy of cooperation, acts of sabotage, the resistance fighters and all those who voluntarily fought with the Germans on the Eastern Front. And at how everyday life changed for the ordinary population.

2. World War II and the occupation of Denmark are still matters for debate. Were the decisions made the right ones? The choices taken have left deep marks on the fabric of Danish life and identity which remain even to this very day.
