Exhibitions – the Victorian Home
In a private property near the National Museum is a large luxurious apartment, fully furnished in the late 19th century Danish style called “klunkestil”. “Klunker” were bobbles of wool used abundantly on, for example, the curtains and furniture of the period. It was furnished in 1890 by the merchant Rudolph Christensen. His daughters Gerda and Ellen Christensen later left the contents of their unique home to the National Museum.
With the kind permission of the owners of the property, limited numbers of visitors are able to see the apartment in its original surroundings. With the exception of two rooms it appears almost completely as it did between 1890 and 1914. The curtains are drawn in the sitting rooms as daylight would damage the almost 100-year-old textiles.
